In places up and down the east coast herds of wild horses survive. What a miracle. The story is that they swam ashore from shipwrecks and adapted to life of seagrass and sand. Horses in captivity are coddled animals that need blankets and brushes and special feed. But these wild horses of Beaufort, Chincoteague, and the like have survived hurricanes, droughts, and all kinds of extremes. Humans help them now. But I think it is more like they help us...to remember what is good and what is true about being alive and cared for no matter the journey we are on.
